Safety & Security

Our Safety and Security team serves the Schools by ensuring our community is safe and secure and enforcing safety policies. These areas of responsibility include traffic control during drop-off and pick-up times, monitoring hallways during and after school hours, and processing visitors. The team works with The University of Chicago Police Department to develop training protocols and safety policies.

The Historic Campus main security desk is located at the Judd Hall entrance and can be reached at 773-834-8628. The Earl Shapiro security desk is located at the main entrance and can be reached at 773-702-4299. These desks are staffed during building hours from 7:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. on school days.

Summer Lab Safety and Security
While much of this is not new, we ask that you honor all requests made of you by our security personnel as they work to apply our procedures consistently, no matter how well they know the members of our community.
  • Lab IDs and on-campus identification
    • Parents and caregivers who already have a school-issued lanyard and ID are asked to visibly display them upon entering Lab buildings and tap in at the security desks.
    • Those without a school-issued lanyard and ID must provide a government-issued ID at the security desk upon entrance and be checked in as visitors. No adult will gain access to campus without such an ID.
  • Earl Shapiro Hall hours and access
    • The Stony Island front door will be unlocked 7:30–8:30 a.m. and 3–3:45 p.m. and will be the only visitor entrance. Tap-in and buzzer access will be available throughout the school day.
    • The side carline door will be used for students entering during drop-off. The parking lot back door will be locked.
  • Historic Campus hours and access
    • Blaine Hall will be Summer Lab's main entrance and will be unlocked 7:30 a.m.–8:45 a.m.
    • Visitors and parents without a school-issued lanyard and ID may check in at the Blaine Hall, Judd Hall, or Kovler Gym security desks. Tap-in and buzzer access will also be available at these entrances throughout the school day.
Lab's security procedures are in place to protect members of the Summer Lab community, particularly our children. Please be patient as you wait to tap in or check in at the security desks.
For questions on Summer Lab security, please contact Jayne VanderVelde, director of Summer Lab, or CSO Dan Green, security supervisor.

Report a Concerning Behavior

If you have observed a concerning, non-emergency incident or behavior, please report to the Summer Lab directors immediately.
