Opening to students entering grades 4–8

Mornings: Summer Lab on Stage
Summer Lab on Stage enters its eighteen season as a unique Summer Lab program combining both acting and music into a theatre experience that is both fun and rewarding. The Summer Lab on Stage teachers develop, stage, and choreograph the final production. They draw additional choreography and improvisation resources from the world–class theater scene in Chicago.  Students become more confident and better able to interact and collaborate with their fellow students as a result. Summer Lab on Stage is a ton of fun. Get ready for the driving pace of this energetic experience as you’ll be making music, dancing, and acting on the first day. A performance marks the culmination of students’ summer successes.

Fiber Arts (3 weeks)

In this class, students explore the creative nature of natural materials while designing their own handmade textiles. We will create a multi-color wall hanging on a wooden loom, explore screen printing techniques, and collaborate on a large-scale public artwork using hand-me-down tee-shirts. Students will choose their concentration for independent works after learning various art processes and techniques. We will focus on Indigenous weaving designs, modern printmaking works, using raw wool to learn felting techniques from start to finish, dying the wool with fruits, vegetables and spices, and using needle work to create original designs. At the end of camp, students will take their loom home to continue mastering their new artistic skills.

Develop your child's intellect through the royal game of chess. Current research shows a strong link between chess and academic performance in a variety of areas, including mathematics and language arts. Chess has been proven to enhance children's motivation, concentration, focus, social skills, and creativity. Each class will consist of a fun, interactive teaching period and guided practice time. Both beginner and experienced players are welcome and will learn under the guidance of an experienced Chess Scholars coach.
