For children entering grades 6–8
Designed by the successful coaching staff of the High School Lab debate team, this summer workshop offers a fast paced yet engaging curriculum equipping students with skills they need to find success as a first year policy debater. This workshop emphasizes debate fundamentals, giving students exposure to argumentation theory and providing students an evidence packet designed to help guide them through the debate topic. The debate topic is the annual resolution chosen by the National Speech and Debate Association. Sessions are spent engaging in debates, practicing speeches, and applying skills from earlier sessions. Students who choose not to continue in competitive policy debate during the academic year will also find great benefit as debate is its own pedagogy, improving students' ability to internalize new concepts, take more efficient notes, ask better questions, and speak with greater organization, confidence, and comprehension.
