For children entering grade 5

This class will focus on honing the analytical reading and writing skills your child will need as their reading class advances. Students in grade 5 need to know how to “look beyond” the text; this includes the skills of analyzing a character’s thoughts and actions, determining the author’s purpose and point of view, identifying key literary elements within a text, and expressing different thoughts and ideas through critical writing. Your child’s growth and understanding will be monitored throughout the summer while they encounter a variety of readings: fiction & non-fiction passages, readers theater, poetry, and novel excerpts. As your child grows as a reader, they need to practice higher-level thinking skills; this class is designed to further introduce these skills and allow your reader to practice them before the start of their academic year.
