Embedding Social Emotional Learning in Life at Lab

Social-emotional learning is a critical component of Lab's curriculum in every division. Through the CASEL Framework, educators and Learning and Counseling teams bring complex concepts into practice for the benefit of students of every age. Most of the time, students do not even realize this critical learning is happening because of the fun they are having doing it.

For example, last year, Middle School Learning and Counseling and the Design Engineering Centers partnered to pilot a seminar that would engage students creatively, constructively, socially, and emotionally. Tied directly to the CASEL Core Competencies (self awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and decision-making capabilities), the project gave students the opportunity to design and print personalized three-dimensional fidget-spinners that they could use to enhance their enjoyment and focus during the school day (and beyond). The colorful, playful results had real impact for the students who opted to participate in this seminar. Awareness of differences between students and their needs is the first step to building a compassionate community. Working side by side to joyfully create tools that support learning makes that compassion tangible for our middle schoolers.
