Lab Announces Amy Solomon, ’10 as 2023 Commencement Speaker

The Class of 2023 Graduation Committee proudly selected Solomon—a film, television producer, and author—to congratulate them on their educational accomplishments and motivate them as they begin the next phase of their lives. In the coming weeks, Solomon will attend a Zoom meeting with the committee to learn more about the class as she prepares her remarks to be given at the graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 8 at 2 p.m. in Rockefeller Chapel.

Solomon was senior class president at U-High when she asked Jason Tyler, currently the chair of the Laboratory Schools Board, to be the commencement speaker for her graduating class. During Tyler’s commencement speech, he asked Solomon to speak at commencement in the future. Solomon also participated on the U-High girl’s soccer team and worked on several political campaigns. Even before becoming a “Labbie” she was no stranger to Lab. In 2021, her dad, Robert Solomon, ‘78, was honored with the Alumni Service Award, and her uncle, James Solomon, '72, MBA '78, an accomplished soccer, basketball, and tennis player at Lab, was inducted into the Lab Athletics Hall of Fame.

Solomon currently resides in sunny Los Angeles where she is a film and television producer on HBO’s Silicon Valley and Barry. After Lab, Solomon attended Princeton University with a degree in journalism. It is there that she shared with the Princeton Alumni Weekly that she became “inundated by funny women.” In 2021 she published Notes from the Bathroom Line: Humor, Art, and Low-Grade Panic from 150 of the Funniest Women in Comedy, a curated “collection of never-before-seen humor pieces—essays, satire, short stories, poetry, cartoons, artwork, and more—from more than 150 of the biggest female comedians today.” When Solomon was interviewed on the comedic podcast Roast of Your Teenage Self in March, 2021, she humorously spoke about going to a high school where the mascot was a color. Lab cannot wait to hear Solomon’s commencement speech to the Maroon class of 2023!

Lab will use Eventbrite for tickets to this year’s commencement ceremony—details will be announced soon. The ceremony will also be live-streamed on YouTube for those who are unable to attend in person; the link will be provided near the date. Read more about Solomon from the Alumni in Action feature in the fall 2022 edition of LabLife.
