The Parents' Association builds community and connection

On recent Sundays, you can find grandparents of Lab students hopping on Zoom to read childhood stories from famous Indian authors like Sudha Murthy, Ruskin Bond, R.K. Narayan, Munshi Premchand, and Tagore. It's "Virtual Storytime with Grandma and Grandpa" hosted by Lab's Desi Culture Group—one of nearly a dozen affinity groups and special committees formed as part of the Lab Parents' Association. Interested in Bollywood hip-hop Zoom classes? They host them for Lab parents as well.

Led by co-presidents Angela Cobb and Lena Jessen, the nearly two dozen parent volunteers (with the help of many more) have organized and supported a wide variety of events and opportunities for Lab families, faculty, and staff to connect. There have been virtual lunches for parents to meet informally, teacher appreciation lunches, and hundreds of Lasagne dinners delivered in gratitude to Lab employees.

At a division level, the four Councils (N–2, LS, MS, HS) have successfully shifted many of their typical meeting events to Zoom. Parent-to-parent sessions are attracting more attendees and have been vital supplements to Lab's principal-led Parent Connect sessions. These have been key elements in keeping our Lab families informed, supported, and connected throughout the school year. So far this year, other Council highlights have included:

  • New family mentor programs
  • Balloon bouquets at both campuses on "first days" for students and just for fun
  • Creating yearbooks
  • Supporting the teachers in any transition (classroom, etc) as the Covid set up on campus evolves
  • Providing grants for special activities. For example: bringing a program from Historical Perspectives on the topic of diversity, inclusion, positive thinking and black history to a LS Special Assembly; supporting U-High ArtsFest; and providing drawing tablets to support Renaissance Magazine.
  • Hosting, in partnership with the PE department, virtual MS Giant Gym nights

Looking forward, the PA will host the 52nd Annual (Virtual) Rites of May on Saturday, May 15.

Meet the PA leadership, Councils, and committees here.
