First graders rock the Macarena
There's no better way to warm up on a chilly winter day than with dancing! Nefatiti Rochester's first graders start their days with Music & Movement. Throughout the fall quarter, they sang songs, learned lyrics, and learned about influential artists, musical groups, and songwriters from the 1950–80s. Now that the snow has set in, it's time to take that musical knowledge and express it through movement. The students learned how to dance the Macarena and have been working on the Cupid Shuffle. They decided to make a music video using a green screen. "The kids had a blast dancing and learning about how their video footage could be edited, chopped up, and put back together on the computer!" says assistant teacher Julia Olmsted. As the lyrics say: "So come and dance beside me / Move with me / Chant with me ... Hey Macarena!"
