Winter Sports wrap-up, Shapiro named Academic All-State Team

Senior Horace Shew concluded his stellar swim career with a fine performance at the IHSA State Swimming Championships on Friday at Evanston HS. Shew finished 31st in the 200IM and 18th in the 100 yard backstroke. Kudos to Horace and coaches Paul Gunty and Kate Chronic on a successful season.

The boys basketball team lost to Phillips HS 61-53 on Friday at Bowen HS in the IHSA 2A Regional Championship game. The Maroons finish with a 16-12 season record. Senior Christian Brookens was named first team ISL All-Conference alongside junior Mohammed Alausa. Junior Jamie Miller and freshman Tolu Johnson won ISL Honorable Mentions. The Maroons finished with a 9-3 record in the ISL for a second place finish.

Senior Roxanne Nesbitt concluded her U-High basketball career at the IHSA 2A 3-point contest, finishing in the top 20 in the State making seven of 15 3-point shots. Junior Eddy Rose advanced in the boys basketball 3-Point Regional contest, he advances to the Collins Sectional contest this coming Friday.

Senior Harrison Shapiro was named to the IHSA Academic All-State team. Senior Tia Polite was named to the Honorable Mention team. Harrison and Tia were elected from over 400 students nominated from across Illinois. Tia plays basketball and soccer while Harrison runs cross-country and track.

The indoor track and field team hosted the first of three Midway Miles track meets on Friday at the Henry Crown Fieldhouse. First place finishers were sophomore Sophie Hood in the 200 meter race, senior James Woodruff in the long-jump and the 4x800 relay team of seniors Ashwin Aggarwal, Nathan Blevins, junior Abraham Zelchenko, and freshman Nick Edwards-Levin.
