Conference on Free Expression in Precollegiate Education
"Since freedom of mind and freedom of expression are the root of all freedom, to deny freedom in education is a crime against democracy."
—Laboratory Schools Founder John Dewey
September 11–13, 2025
Hosted by the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools
in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago
The University of Chicago Laboratory Schools are thrilled to welcome leaders, teachers, and students from independent schools across the nation to explore the nuances of free expression in pre K–12 education.
The FXP Conference will include participatory workshops and discussions for administrators, teachers, and students, as well as keynotes and panel discussions featuring leaders from peer independent schools and renowned free expression experts at the University of Chicago and beyond.
We encourage you to join us. At many independent schools, institutional goals and values include fostering an experience of belonging and acculturating free expression and open discourse. Fulfillment of these goals will be important to all of us. We know the ability to engage productively with diverse viewpoints and opinions will prepare students for a robust college experience, advanced academic inquiry, and success in the personal, professional, and civic spheres. And yet, tricky questions and tensions are inevitable. School leaders, teachers, and students can work and learn in partnership on these nuanced topics.
Who should attend?
The conference is intended for independent schools serving students in Grade 12 and younger. To make the most of this opportunity, participating schools are strongly encouraged to include in their delegation two administrators, two faculty members, and three Grade 11–12 students.
How to attend?
Participation will be free; there is no registration fee, and meals and accommodations for a limited delegation from each school will be covered until we reach capacity. Registrations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Participating schools should plan to cover their own travel costs and incidentals.
