Attendance Daily attendance is important for all
participants. Lasting friendships are forged over our summer season, and each day away
can cut into the value your child receives from the program. Recognizing, nonetheless,
that some absences are unavoidable, please be sure to notify Summer Lab via email
here or via phone to the Summer Lab
Office at (773) 834-7766 — this “hotline” is available 24 hours/day. Of additional importance for High School students taking
classes for credit: your class will have an attendance policy that must be adhered
to in order for you to receive credit. Typically this will require missing no more
than two or three days, if that.
Registration and Payment
Registration is due by April 30. Decisions will be made regarding under-enrolled activities at this time and classes may be withdrawn. After this date, however, classes and activities scheduled to run may still accept enrollment, although some classes may have reached their enrollment limits. Registration, whether on-line or via printed form, is not complete until signed documents, plus payment and recommendation document, if required, are received at: University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, 1362 E. 59th St., Chicago, IL 60637. Incomplete registrations may be returned and no reservation held.
Cancellation & Refund Policy
Requests for cancellation must be received in writing no later than May 15.
An administrative fee of $200 will be withheld from any refunds.
Confirmation
You will receive confirmation of your enrollment mid- to late-May.
Enrollment
Many Summer School classes have enrollment limits, so please be sure to indicate
second and third choices as well as your first choice. Telephone inquiry may
help you determine class availability, but offer no guarantee. Summer Lab 2008
reserves the right to cancel under-enrolled classes prior to the beginning of
Summer Session. If you have enrolled in a canceled class, you will be contacted
on or about May 15 to discuss alternative course options.
Early Bird Special!
Enrollments received by April 15 may take a $100 credit off the total fee for
their Summer Lab program, or 10% if fees are less than $1,000.
Early Day/Late Day
Early Day (7:30 am - 8:30 am) and Late Day (3:00 pm - 5:30 pm)
programs offer students a safe, supervised environment to gather,
rest, and play before and after summer programs. Please observe
pick-up and drop-off times accurately; staff cannot look after
children outside of these hours. Repeated difficulty working within
this timetable may be grounds for dismissal from the program.
Lunch/Snacks
Children may bring their own bag lunch, snacks, and drinks beginning the first day. (Snacks will be provided for Nursery and Kindergarten classes as well as for Sports Camps and Late Day enrollees.) Please pack foods that do not require refrigeration. Limited lunch selections may be available for purchase at Café Lab, the Laboratory Schools’ cafeteria. If your student plans to utilize our cafeteria, please contact the Summer Lab office at 773-834-7766.
Procedural Authorization & Agreement, Medical Treatment, Field Trip Permissions, etc.
The registration form includes your release and hold harmless agreements as well as acknowledgement of the
Laboratory Schools Standards of Behavior. Please be sure to complete all sections of the registration form and accompanying documents.
Incomplete applications will be returned and no reservation will be held. Additional costs for field trips may be assessed to
parents prior to the trips by way of notice distributed by classroom teachers or camp staff.
AM-PM Transition
The Laboratory Schools cafeteria will be supervised from 12:30 pm until 1:00 pm daily for all students
transitioning between morning and afternoon classes or morning classes and afternoon camp.
Children grade 4 and below will be seen to their next activity. Afternoon-only students or campers may be dropped off in the cafeteria by parents or caregivers, or may go directly to their activity by 1 pm.
Swimming
K-4 summer school students will have swimming instruction unless field trips interfere with
their scheduled swim time. Students should provide swimsuits, swim caps, and goggles and
nose clips if needed. Please label or mark items clearly with your child's name.
Dismissal
Children entering grade 5 and higher are expected to dismiss themselves to their ride
home or to their next activity, e.g., Sports Camp or Late Day. Children entering grade
4 and below must be met at the end of their day unless parents authorize in writing
that the child may self-dismiss. Please see the appropriate section of the registration
form. Please provide your dismissal instructions on your registration form.
Late Pick-Up
Late pick-up creates an unsafe situation for child and program. Children not
scheduled for Late Day or Sports Camps must be picked up by 3:10 pm or they
will be moved at that time to the Late Day program and the family will be
charged the Late Day fee. Children left beyond 5:40 pm will be moved to the
Security Officer in Blaine, and charged a $50 late fee. Recurrent difficulty
with this issue may be grounds for additional fees or suspension from the
program.
Seamless Schedule
When choosing your child's schedule, please be mindful that children on campus must be in a program.
A schedule could be structured with a two-hour opening in the afternoon, say, between Morning School
and late afternoon Sports Camp, but this child would need to be picked up at the conclusion of the
Morning class and returned to campus for the Sports Camp.
Transportation
Summer Lab will operate school bus service to and from
the North Side of Chicago as done in 2007; click here for the North Side
Bus enrollment form, and send it in with the appropriate payment and your registration form.
Photographs & Video Recording
The Laboratory Schools use images of students in its paper and electronic
publications. Images are also used for promotional and archival purposes.
These uses include the regular school academic program as well as all
auxiliary, co-curricular, and extracurricular programs. Students are not
identified. If you DO NOT wish to your child’s photo in any Lab Schools’ publication or on the web site, please put the request in writing to: David W. Magill, Director, University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, 1362 East 59th Street, Chicago, IL 60637.
