Photographic Workshop in Sicily

For students currently in high school
June 15 - June 26

World-class photographer Ernesto Bazan and Summer Lab 2007 present a Sicilian Photographic Workshop for their second collaboration in Summer Lab’s Field Study program. Mt. Etna, an active volcano, towers at over 10,000 feet in the east, and the rugged, mountainous interior ranges through majestic and historic villages and cities to beautiful beaches which surround the island. Lab School students will experience a 10-day photographic journey to diverse parts of the Mediterranean island. The goal of the workshops is to help each participant create an appealing body of work with personal and strong individual images. Much of each day will be spent photographing coastal and inland sites rich in Sicilian history and character. Daily meetings with Mr. Bazan will provide students with guidance to a series of revealing and lasting images that will display students’ unique perceptions of their Sicilian experience. Our students will return home with a new commitment to their work and their creativity, and a deeper understanding of this island so integral to the origins of contemporary civilization. Veterans of Lab’s first outing with Mr. Bazan, in 2005, have characterized it as a “life-changing experience.”

“The enchanting land where Archimedes taught and Saint Paul preached was a Greek colony, a Roman province, an Arab emirate and a Norman kingdom. The Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Swabians, Angevins and Aragonese made Sicily their own, leaving behind an eclectic history that you can still touch today.” – Best of Sicily Magazine
