World War I Battle Sites: All Along the Western Front
June 27 - July 7, 2008
Open to students entering grades 7 - 9
Visit historic European World War I battle sites during this two-week excursion to the Western Front. Our first stop will be in Frankfurt, birthplace of Goethe, and the coronation site for Holy Roman Emperors from 1562 to 1806.
We will visit Saarbrucken, the Verdun Battlefields, Fort de Douaumont, as well as the Memorial de Verdun – which houses a moving collection of newsreels and photos.
Three days and nights in Brussels are highlighted by a guided excursion to Yprés, the In Flanders Field Museum, and visits to the towns of Cambrai and Albert. From there, we will head to Paris for four days. Explore the cosmopolitan City of Light, while also touring Chateau-Thierry, Sacré-Coeur, Montmartre and Versailles. Students will be integral partners in this trip, using music, art, writing, history and discussion in response to these sites.
