Latin 1
Open to students entering grades 9 - 12
This course is intended for students who wish to complete the first year of high school Latin, either to continue the second level in the fall or simply to gain some experience with the language. The course introduces vocabulary as well as the basic grammar and structures of Latin: the first, second, and third declensions of nouns, and the present, imperfect, perfect and pluperfect of verbs. Grammatical points are presented through a series of readings centered on a family living in Pompeii just before the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D., and later in Britain and Alexandria, Egypt. Required texts are Cambridge Latin Course, Units 1 and 2. Students will be able to collect their books on the first day of class.
