Foam Rubber Frolic
For students entering grades 6 - 8
Since the beginnings of civilization, masks and puppets have been used to create characters in both drama and ceremony. Mask and puppet making today are important aspects of the film industry. In recent history, a special niche within this industry was revolutionized by the father of the Muppets, Jim Henson. Some of the success of the Muppets can be attributed to the unusual kinetic materials they are made out of, especially foam rubber. In this seminar, simple Henson-like methods and materials will be used to make masks and puppets. While creative production will be the main focus, art historical context, dramatic character development and mask acting will also be explored.
