Investigating Chicago - Writers’ Workshop
For students entering grade 6 - 8
In this workshop-style course, students will develop their skills as non-fiction and fiction writers. Students will read Chicago authors and stories about Chicago, past and present. Students will complete several major writing assignments during the six weeks: a movie review, sculpture descriptions, short stories, blues songs, poetry, a journalistic feature article, and a biographical profile. Topics will include Chicago films, the 1968 Democratic National Convention, Chicago sports, and the history and current status of the Chicago Housing Authority. Students will take several field trips to explore downtown Chicago and Navy Pier, the South Side, Jackson Park, Taste of Chicago, Lincoln Park Zoo, the Chicago Historical Society, Pilsen and Chinatown. The class will produce a final on-line magazine to showcase student work.
