Sumi-e Paintings

During the winter quarter, Colleen Conley's fourth grade art students were introduced to the ancient Japanese painting technique of Sumi-e painting. They learned the intriguing beginning of this painting technique and the unique methods and material they needed to create their own personal masterpieces.

Their greatest challenge was to learn how to handle the bamboo brush and to understand that practicing certain brushstrokes would result in control of the brush and ink. In time, they found their own signature that resulted in a subtle yet personal Sumi-e painting.
