This project was created and developed by Maria Palopoli.

In this project, students research honeybees and then create a simulated honeybee hive. This activity requires considerable interdisciplinary planning and cooperation among teachers and students.

To prepare for the simulation, students are assigned roles such as Queen, Queen Caretakers, Egg Caretakers, Comb Builders, Foragers, Predators, Guards, and Larvae Caretakers. Each group of students is given a list of tasks to complete, and students work together to determine the ways they may accomplish each task.

A writeup of this project, entitled How My Class Caught the "Bug" by Maria L. Palopoli and Philip T. Matsikas, was published in Science and Children, May 1995, Vol 32(8).
