"There is no round table"CamelotReviewed by Ruth Grossman A man and a woman are holding hands and spinning around and around. They are laughing, when suddenly they stop. The woman starts to cry, and as the man looks at her, his smile fades. The woman runs out of the room. The man and woman are King Arthur (Richard Harris) and Queen Guenavere (Vanessa Redgrave). Guenavere has fallen in love with Lancelot (Franco Nero), a French knight who is very full of himself. The king (Arthur) is torn, for he loves Guenavere more then anything in the world and Lancelot is his good friend. Meanwhile, Arthur's son (not Guenavere's) Mordred (David Hemmings) has come to court and is wreaking havoc, and Arthur is letting him, even against King Pellinore's (Lionel Jeffries) judgment. Pellinore is a good friend of Arthur's and is staying with him until he can remember what country he is king of. Arthur then decides to stay in the woods one night, and back at the castle Mordred finds Lancelot with Guenavere and sends the guards at Lancelot. Lancelot fights them and runs away. When Arthur comes back to the castle, Mordred has proof that Lancelot and Guenavere were seeing each other, and so Guenavere by law must be burned at the stake for betraying the king. Will Lancelot save Guenavere ? Will the Round Table live through this? Will Arthur ever see Guenavere again?
This was a very long sad movie, and I wouldn't watch it again even though the first half is wonderful. If I had made the movie I would have made it much happier, because the end is very depressing. I don't think children under 10 would understand it and I think you need to know the story of King Arthur to enjoy the good parts and live through the bad parts. |
