Changing JobsGet ShortyReviewed by Greg Kohlhagen
Chili Palmer (John Travolta) walks down the stairs at a fancy restaurant and finds two people that he knows--and also dislikes. He asks one of the men whose name is Bear (James Gandolfini) if he is a good stunt man. When he replies yes, Chili punches him down the stairs and leaves. The other man standing on the stairwell thinks about revenge against Chili. In Get Shorty, Chili Palmer is a lone shark who wants to become part of the movie business. Harry Zimm (Gene Hackmen) is a producer who is Chili's way to the movie business. Martin Weir (Danny Devito) is a famous actor that wants to make a movie with Chili. One problem Chili has is that he is "in the family" (the mafia), so he has to find people that owe the family money. Another problem they have is that some of the money they need is hidden in a locker in the airport, but no one wants to get it because cops are everywhere. Barry Sonnenfeld is a director that I have never heard of but after seeing this movie, I think he is a very good director. The interesting thing to this plot is that Chili is a lone shark, which means that he goes around collecting money that is owed to his Mafia family. Chili has to retrieve $500,000 that this fairly dumb man has hidden in a bag. Chili is supposed to give it to the family, but he wants to use it for the movie he is making with Harry Zimm. Get Shorty is a very funny movie with very good acting by all the characters. Chili Palmer is a sly cheating role, played well by John Travolta. This movie is definitely not directed towards kids under 12 years of age because of its constant use of swear words. If you like a complicated plot, this movie has a great one. It is one of the good comedy movies of this year 1996 and is a great rental movie for the family.
