There's No Place Like The MoviesThe Wizard of OzReviewed by Erin Rapoport All of a sudden, a small pink bubble appears in front of Dorothy. The bubble gets bigger and bigger. Then a pretty women comes out of the bubble. "Are you a good witch or a bad witch," the beautiful lady asks. Dorothy, puzzled, answers her with, "I'm not a witch". If you like witches, you'll like The Wizard of Oz. It used to be my favorite movie, but if you're older then about 7, it's not as good. The Wizard of Oz was adapted from a book, which I find better then the movie, written by L. Frank Baum. The directors George Cukor, Victor Fleming, and King Vidor do make the movie come to life. Judy Garland plays the lead character, Dorothy Gale. A lot of people play two roles, one in a dream Dorothy has and one back home. Ray Bolger plays my two favorite characters, Scarecrow and Hunk Andrews. The Wizard of Oz is all about a dream. Or is it? In the beginning of the movie, there's a terrible tornado in the movie. They used a sock to and spinned it to create the effect of a tornado. Dorothy's outside when it hits. She runs into her house and a window comes flying and bumps her on the head. The tornado pulls the house off the ground with Dorothy in it. Where will she end up? The Wizard of Oz is a musical. There's one song called "If I Only had a Brain". It's split up in verses and the three characters who sing it each have their own verse about what they want from the Wizard. Dorothy sings many songs, one of them being "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", a song about being in another world, not like home. Harold Arlen (BS:AA) and Herbert Stothart (O:AA) wrote the music. I recommend it for young children. I think this movie is okay. You can't see it in a movie theater unless you go back in time to 1939. But that's a different movie review, "Is it Time Yet" (read it!) |
