Baseball's Worst

The Baseball Hall Of Shame by Bruce Nash and Allan Zullo
Reviewed by Brian Gill

Baseball is not just diving catches, backhanded stops, game winning homeruns, and no-hitters. It is also missing fly balls; bobbling grounders; huge hitting slumps; and horrendous pitching. "The history of our national pastime boasts a rich heritage of shameful moments both on and off the field by teams, players, managers, coaches, owners, general managers, umpires, groundskeepers, and even the fans themselves" (p. 7).

In The Baseball Hall Of Shame by Bruce Nash and Allan Zullo, they talk about those exact shameful moments. The book features many stories ranging from the dumbest trades ever made, to the most tasteless team mascots, to the most pitiful pitching performances. They have stories about beanball wars, illegal bats, ridiculous-looking uniforms, spit and cut balls, bad owners, horrible players, and anything bad about the game that you could think of.

One example of a story, was the time pitcher Dizzy Dean accidentally hit seven batters in a row. Another was when the Mets traded future Hall-of-Famer Nolan Ryan to the Angels in exchange for average fielder Jim Fregosi. One story told about the time pitcher Bob Buhl had a streak that went forty-two games and eighty-eight at bats without a hit.

If you are a baseball fanatic, you really like those funny blooper videos, or you just want to find out how some of baseball really is, you would love Bruce Nash and Allan Zullo's The Baseball Hall Of Shame
