A Girl Who is Determined

Catherine, Called Birdie by Karen Cushman
Reviewed by Naomi Leibowitz

In the book Catherine, Called Birdie, by Karen Cushman, we hear of a young girl, Catherine, who feels trapped within the walls of her castle. She feels that she is doomed to a life of sewing, which is a common pass time for her, but not one that she enjoys. She is an adventurous girl who dreams of becoming more that she is now. She wants everything better that she has it now. "When I marry it will be no cheap rag- tag hurry up affair as [ my brother] Robert's was. I will have silks and music and lights and important guests from foreign lands with musical names" (p. 112).

Her father, a simple minded man, wants her to marry well so that he can expand his property. Catherine pretty much hates her father, as well as all of the suitors that come to the castle. One after another she manages, using her wit and shrewdness, to get the suitors to leave, with out ever looking back. The character of Catherine is one that I can relate to. I know that I want to be something great when I grow up, and that I will go to great lengths to get it. I like to have the best of everything and to have things just the way I want them. Catherine is a lttle more timid in getting what she wants. She doesn't dive right in, but rather takes one thing at a time; however, she is undoubtedly adventurous in everything.

Catherine is very set in her ways. She knows what she wants and believe me, she'll get it. "[I] will never consent [to marrige] ....They cannot bind me down with ropes and force my mouth open and closed while my father says in a high voice, ' I will' " (p. 171).

Catherines character is an inspiration to me. She taught me that I should go for my dreams and not settle for anything less. Even though she is just made up, I think that a lot of people should try to do some of the things that Catherine did. I also think this book flowed very nicely. It was a pleasure to read and I recommend it to anyone.
