During the story, Benji changes from a lovable and seemingly harmless dog, to a courageous fearless hero. Benji is made to do certain things, because of his small size, and light weight. During the course of the book he is dognapped, and also forced to leave his beloved, Tiffany.
Even though he was courageous, Benji wasn't being very wise when he was nice to the big brown dog. "He was a gracious, friendly, and generous dog, and unlike some others he had met, the last thing he would consider, would be to hog all of the food for himself"(p.44). Even if Benji was a nice dog, why would you be nice to a dog, who was mean to you? I suppose Benji, just doesn't like having enemies. Courage is Benji's outstanding personality trait. This is because of the brave acts that he keeps doing. First of all, he saves Cindy's life. Cindy had been taken hostage. She would have been shot, hadn't fearless Benji, bit "Chandler Dietrich" in the hand. Benji also jumped out of a second storey window. Luckily he bounced off of an awning and safely on the ground.
Benji also did the right thing when he did not touch the English couple. It was true that he was safe with them and that they were protecting him from other people, but they still dognapped him from the pound. Even though they said nice things like, "Well, hello, Benji. How are you, old chap?" (p. 53) Benji didn't trust them because he could sort of sense there was something wrong. Benji's distrust of the English couple allowed him to be reunited with Mary, Cindy, Paul, and Tiffany. Benji jumped out of the apartment window where the English couple were keeping him because he could tell that they weren't going to continue to be kind to him.
I can identify with Benji when he feels very alone, where he is in the city of Athens, with many people. He feels alone because he does not know anyone. This is sort of like me. Even though I may be in a room full of people, I can feel very alone.
The most unique characteristic of Benji is his kindness. Lots of small dogs make up what they lack in size with toughness, but some of them are also very rude. Benji is tough too, but never rude. Benji is kind, tough, and is a cute dog.
Overall I thought that For the Love of Benji was a very good book. It mixed comedy, adventure, and some sad moments all together. It author, I.F. Love, wrote very clearly. I could understand what he was talking about at all times. I especially like the fact that the book had a happy ending. Benji became a father!
