Amber and the Jewel of Judgment
The Hand of Oberon by Roger Zelany
Reviewed by Eva Arnason
The Hand of Oberon by Roger Zelany is the fourth of five novels. This series is based on a family of people that can travel into other worlds and they believe that their world, Amber, is the one true world. The main character, Corwin is trying to save his world from being destroyed by his brother Brand, who has turned crazy. Corwin goes to the great Pattern which is the one true world and it has been damaged by someone in the family. Corwin's friend finds a Trump on the pattern. Trumps are cards with drawings on them. If you use them you can talk to or transport the person on the card. When his brother Random looked at it closely he said, "I was never anything to him but a whisper of life in the darkness. But they used my son for this"(PG. 12) because it was a trump for his son Martin and he never talked to his son. Martin was born after the trumps were made and almost no one knew how to make them so Corwin.
The story starts to pick up when the crazy brother Brand steals
the "The Jewel of Judgment" which Corwin does not know the complete
power of. If Brand walks the pattern wearing the Jewel he will be able to
use its power.
This book is a good book full of surprises. I think this would be the
best book I have read this year because I love Science Fiction books.
They are more fun than other books. The ending of the book is one of
the best surprises because Roger Zelazny tried to make it as neat and
interesting as possible. I do, however, recommend that you read the
other books in the series first to get an idea of what the characters
and surroundings are like.
