Upstairs
The Attic by T.S. Rue
Reviewed by Ben Braun
Imagine you go away for the weekend to a peaceful hotel in the woods.
When you get there you start to hear strange scratching noises coming from
the attic. In T.S. Rue's The Attic, this happens to four girls (Tessa, Sierra, Brittany and Allie). The peaceful hotel in the woods isn't so peaceful after all. When Sierra is dared to go into the attic and doesn't come back, her friends go looking for her. What they find in the attic is something they've never seen before.
The author did a good job of building suspense. For example, when the
girls were trapped in a stairwell, Tessa was hanging to a handrail for dear life.
Below her was empty blackness. Her hand just slipped when...... Allie grabbed
her wrist and she and the other girls pulled her up to safety.
When Tessa finally saw the fearful creature that had made the noises in the attic, it approached her very slowly. Her only way out was blocked. The author created suspense because we didn't know when or how the creature would strike.
