Needlman's Nursery/Kindergarten

1995-1996 Class

The kids pictured are members of my Nursery/Kindergarten class at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. I like to think of us as living in a human rights classroom where we have created our own Declaration of Human Rights, based on the United Nations Universal Declaration with differences respected and children encouraged to think for themselves.

The environment and caring for it begins with the daily job of the environmentalist who, with the help of us all, pick up people stuff we find in our playgrounds, on walks, or wherever we happen to be out of doors. But it doesn't stop here. We recycle juice cans, children wash their plastic juice cups in warm soapy water after snack each day, and teachers dip the cups in bleach water and rinse in hot running water. This simple job saves 100 paper cups every 4 days. Over the course of a year we will have saved 4,400 paper cups---No little accomplishment.

Our delightful picture was made in honor of the Lab School's 100th Birthday. Children worked on a project which will be available for sale at the Gala Centennial Party to be held in the spring of 1996. It is a small spiral bound book, hand printed by a parent, hand illustrated by the kids. The book, Ideas for Lunch Boxes: Good for Kids, Good for the Environment is available for sale. Price is $5.00 per copy. Contact me at the Laboratory Schools, or through fhahn@vertex.ucls.uchicago.edu to place an order. You calculate how many trees we'll save in the next 100 years........
