I am Patricia "Vickie" Kamberos, a proud alumna of the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools as well as a "veteran" teacher in the Lower School. This year we are celebrating our centennial year. Many exciting activities have been planned throughout the year commencing with an all school sing on January 21, 1996 at Rockefeller Chapel. One thousand five hundred students, families, alumni, faculty, and friends gathered to honor John Dewey's innovative educational ideas. All classes from nursery through high school designed maroon-backed banners with a centennial theme. These banners were carried in a procession by the children.
My fourth grade class is very caught up with the centennial idea. So far they have designed T-shirts and sweatshirts with special centennial logos that they wore to the sing. We are also working on making centennial pillows to be sold at our school benefit in April.
For a language arts project we made up acrostic poems with CENTENNIAL and IDA DEPENCIER as the key words. Ida DePencier, one of our retired faculty members, celebrated her 103rd birthday in 1996. She, like the Laboratory Schools, is celebrating her centennial years. We hope you enjoy the poems.
