The 2 main events
that we organize throughout the school year are Day of the Dead (Dias
de Los Muertos) and Cinco de Mayo.
Day of the Dead
In
order to educate the U-High community, we typically host a community
assembly and we have in past years invited people such as Carlos Cortez
(a storywriter), Sammy Torres (a percussionist) and Brenda Cardenas(a
poet). In addition, we have an altar set up in Rowley
Library. We encourage members of the school community to contribute
little objects to the altar in memory of deceased loved one. Also, in
the last couple of years, we have started the tradition of giving out
marigolds to students and teachers. We Also encourage them to donate
these to the altar in memory of the deceased. In past years, we had
given real flowers. However, this year, we tried something new by making
our own marigolds out of tissue paper. Click here
to read the flyer that we passed out to explain what Day of the Dead
is, and the traditions that go along with it.
This
is the altar in Rowley Library. The marigolds are the ones that were put
on the altar by students to honor a deceased loved one.

Cinco de Mayo
This
year, we plan to celebrate Cinco de Mayo by inviting dancers to perform
in an assembly.
Arts Fest
For
Arts Fest (a day, sponsored by the school, when students participate
in various art workshops instead
of going to regular class), Latinos Unidos has hosted many workshops
ranging from food,
to dance, to art. In past years, we have done workshops on salsa dancing,
clay mask making, printmaking, guacamole making, and even Guatemalan
doll making.
