Lower School Curriculum
Activites in Lower School Physical Education are designed to develop local motor skills and gross motor skills. Activites are also designed to promote fitness and begin to develop an age-appropriate understanding of fitness concepts. In kindergarten through second grade, students attend PE classes four days a week throughout the year. Third and fourth graders attend longer periods three days a week throughout the year.
Fifth Grade
Age-appropriate
activities are designed to promote the psychomotor and affective
development of students in team, individual, aquatic, fitness, and
rhythmic experiences. The emphasis is placed on basic skill development
and organized games. Units, ranging from two to four weeks in length,
are conducted in soccer, tennis, basketball, dance, tumbling, swimming,
gymnastics, floor hockey, track, softball, and net games. PE classes
meet four days a week throughout the year.
Middle School Curriculum
Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Grades
Age-appropriate activities are designed to promote the psychomotor and affective development of students in team, individual, aquatic, fitness, and rhythmic experiences. The emphasis is placed on the development of more advanced skills and strategy in more highly organized activities and (sometimes) competitive situations. Units, ranging from two to four weeks in length, are conducted in soccer, touch football, tennis, volleyball, basketball, adventure education, fitness center, swimming, gymnastics and softball. In addition, eighth graders participate in elective units during spring quarter. These electives include a wide range of options designed to allow students the opportunity to explore new activities. PE classes meet four days a week throughout the year.
High School Curriculum
- Physical Education I (freshman)
- Physical Education II (sophomore)
- Physical Education III (junior)
Three full years of physical education are required for graduation. All freshmen, sophomores, and juniors must register for Physical Education I, II, and III, respectively. Students are expected to complete their Physical Education requirements by the end of Junior year.
The freshman, sophomore, and junior physical education curriculum is a semi-elective program designed to give each student the opportunity to explore a variety of activities while learning health fitness concepts. Limitations of space and facilities preclude the possibility of all students being able to register in every course they desire; however, we are typically able to give students their first or second choice of activity unit for all electives. Each student must register for six activity courses per year. Each completed unit is given 1/6 credit.
Physical Education IV
Seniors who have not completed their physical education requirement must register for Physical Education IV. Those needing less than three quarters' credit are required to register for physical education during the Fall or Winter Quarters. Course registration will take place at the beginning of school. Requirements are not waived for May Project.
Elective: Seniors
Pre-requisite: placement by the department Seniors who have completed their physical education requirement may register for any activity which has an opening. Advance registration is not possible.
Registration for physical education courses follows these guidelines:
- All freshman must enroll a dance unit, a swim unit, and Health 9/Fitness Training. Their other two units for the year are open registration (electives).
- Sophomores must enroll Health 10.
- Juniors must must enroll in a CPR class.
- Registration for specific activity courses will take place in September during the opening week of school.
- During registration, any student who has not yet passed the swim test must register for instructional swim for his/her first PE unit of the school year. New students will have the opportunity to test out of instructional swim (prior to registration).

Students with medical excuses from swimming must have them on file before registration begins. Those bringing medical excuses after registration will be dropped from physical education for their scheduled swimming classes and will make up lost time in their senior year. All medical excuses automatically terminate in June and MUST be renewed in the Fall.
To obtain a medical excuse from a Physical Education class, a medical excuse from a physician must be presented to the Department. If the excuse is for a period of time that exceeds 25% of the class meetings, the student will receive a grade of medical (Withdraw Attendance - Medical) for that unit if she/he is not able to make up the classes at a time that is mutually agreed upon by the teacher and student. This unit will need to be made up, either during a student's free period when high school classes are offered, or during the first two quarters of senior year.
