Summer field study takes students to North Woods and Latin America

As soon as the school year is over, ten Middle School students and two of their Chicago public school peers will leave for Villa Sin Miedo, Puerto Rico, as part of Lab's Summer Field Study Program.

"The trip will take place from June 11 through 19 and students will help build and repair homes while working closely with the citizens of the village," said David Harris, Middle School history teacher and organizer of the program. Accompanying as a chaperon is Lisa Washington, Nursery-Kindergarten teacher. The visit marks the second year that Lab students have worked in the village.

In July, twelve students will travel to the North Woods of Wisconsin for a camping and canoeing trip. It is the second year that students have taken part in the trip, which is organized by Michel Lacocque, Middle School counselor. Other chaperons are Sylvia Aschliman, Middle School counselor, and Tom Piane, physical education teacher.

A final session will take fourteen High School students to Chile from August 1 through 17 on a trip led by Joyce Carrasco, third-grade teacher, and her husband, the Rev. Oscar Carrasco. The group will spend five days in the central region of Chile, visiting Santiago, Valparaiso, and Viña del Mar.

"The majority of time will be spent in southern Chile, where students will work on a community project with two local schools in Curacautin, the Rev. Carrasco's hometown," Harris said.

Wisconsin is one of the sites for Summer Field Study.
