Covenant lays groundwork for school/parent partnershipLearning from examples of other independent schoolsThe Laboratory Schools are looking at new ways to better connect with parents by studying examples of school/parent contracts from other independent schools and developing a Laboratory Schools Covenant to guide relationships between families and the Schools. The new understanding will help parents and the Schools better appreciate their complementary roles in the education of students, said Director Lucinda Lee Katz. "We are truly fortunate to have a talented and dedicated parent body," she said. "The parents who send their children to Lab do so because of the high value they place on education. We achieve our goals of providing the best education possible when we incorporate this parent interest into our work as educators. "Our parents volunteer in many ways and share their talents with students in classroom presentations, in providing extra hands for special projects, and in helping us raise the support we need to make the Schools exceptional," she added. "We value this partnership." However, the roles of parents and teachers are not the same, Katz pointed out. The discussions underway will help to make these distinctions clearer as well as to clarify the ways in which the various parts of the Schools community can best communicate, she added. Continued |
