Class of 2000
Sophomore Retreat
Sophomore Retreat is an exciting tradition at U-High. The goals of the retreat are to provide students with a non-urban environmental experience, enhance
class unity and fellowship, and provide an opportunity for personal growth.
Location:
Touch of Nature Environmental Center, a branch of Southern Illinois University in
Carbondale.
Since 1949, SIUC has been home to this unique center for outdoor, experiential and environmental
learning. It is well respected in North America for programs emphasizing both natural and human
resources. Touch of Nature offers a wide variety of educational and service programs including
environmental education, adventure and therapeutic recreation, executive and staff development,
conference and banquet facilities. Educational and service programs are available year around to a
variety of population types, age groups and affiliations. Touch of Nature is a 3,100 acre complex
located at Little Grassy Lake on Giant City Road.
University High School has had a long relationship
with the Touch of Nature staff and this is one of the highlights of the U-High experience.During the retreat, students will be divided into eight groups in order to participate in a series
of physically and mentally challenging activities, including canoeing, rock climbing, and team
course. Evening activities are planned by the student Steering Committee and the Touch of Nature
staff. The entire event is chaperoned by ten U-high faculty members and the 14 professionally-trained
staff of the Center.
Duration:
4 days/3 nights
The Sophomore Retreat for the class of 2000 will begin on Tuesday, October 14 and last until
