The Backyard
By: Emily K. Arntson
The leaves, golden, brown fell from the trees sprinkling the coarse thick green lawn with leaves. There was a flutter of flapping wings as the birds flew to the tubular cylinders of bird seed. The fence along the left was wood boards. The fence at the far end was a high wire fence. The right one was mesh. There were lots of trees. Lots of trees means lots of squirrels and birds.
Rosie, the little salt and pepper schnauzer, loved to romp and run over the chocolate brown mud and the green grass as the leaves crunched beneath her paws.
One day in this garden Mimi, the orange striped cat, came from behind the left wooden fence. When she spied her opportunity, she went for it. She saw a robin poking around in the soft earth, but then the little robin heard feline paws and he fled. Up onto the rusty wire fence, onto the big maple, onto the post in the vegetable patch. The robin was in a jam-what to do? But just then a sharp "yip" cut through the cool air. It was Rosie, she raced through the coarse grass at Mimi. Mimi fled in terror over the fence.
To Rosie and Mimi that's a common enough scene. But as for the little robin, he will never be able to repay his gratitude.
