Grandpa's Childhood

By: Anna Xu

My name is Rose Mary. My grandpa and grandma are coming from Kansas. We live in New York and they are coming on an airplane. Then before I could finish my sentence a train stopped right in front of me. Out stepped grandpa and grandma.

"Let me help you Pa," Dad said.

"Grandpa !" I looked over my shoulder and my little sister, Sarah, was running towards me. Then grandpa shoved the luggage into Dad's hands and hugged Sarah.

"When we get home," he said, "let me tell you a story."

So when we got home he sat down in a rocking chair and he said, "A long time ago I could not think of anything but treasure and that day I got what I wanted."

"Tell us grandpa tell us your story," I said.

"I lived on a farm with a pond in the backyard. The pond was very green and you could barely see the fish swimming in the water. The pond was beautiful; it had trees on one side and wheat on the other. Sometimes the huge snapping turtles would swim in the lake and sometimes the snakes would. Well, anyway my job for the family was to fish. One day I was fishing and I caught a two foot long fish! It lasted for two days. On the third day of fishing my mother came by and said,"Billy!"

Before we could continue grandma rang the dinner bell. "Oh dang it," he said. Let's go and eat shall we?"

"Yes," my little sister said excitedly."

When we got into the dining room there was a feast laid out in front of us. There was chicken, rice, peaches, beans and for dessert, pie and cake. After being stuffed with pie and cake, grandpa continued with his story.

"Now where were we? Oh yes, now I remember," he said. "On the third day my mother came by and said, Billy you catch a big fish while your father and I go in to town."

" O.K. " I said.

"An hour later , I tugged on my line and I thought I caught a big fish. I pulled and pulled. Then thinking the line would break I dug a deep hole put my pole in. I ran to the barn and picked up an anchor with a rope tied to it and ran back. Then I threw the anchor into the pond. It landed right where my line was and then I pulled and pulled. Then Mary (your grandma) helped me pull the treasure up! But your grandma and I were too young to get married so my mother and your grandma's mother made a ring that connected and locked and so we could be separated from each other. Do you want to know why we got married? Because we didn't want to split the treasure! After ten years we were married."

"Then our mother called, "Sarah! Rose Mary! It's time for bed." And that ended it.
