My Life as "The Wall"

By: Lizzy Scholom

As a wall, I often realize that I enjoy "the good life." Unlike most walls, I am, in fact, not indoors, but in the middle of the woods! Now I know that seems strange, but, you see, I live at the L.O.M.C. (Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center) in Oregon, Illinois and I am simply for kids (or adults) that come here to climb. I know it seems weird that kids should be climbing a wall, but I happen to be an obstacle in a stress challenge. The kids have to work together to get everyone up and over me by boosting and pulling from the top. (I have a convenient little ledge on the other side, so kids can pull each other up.)

As a wall, I always enjoy kids having fun, especially while climbing up me. Just recently a really big group of kids (and teachers) came and stayed for a couple of days. They said they were from a place called "Lab School (whatever that is). They seemed to enjoy climbing up me a lot. A few actually said out loud that I was their favorite stress challenge. That made me really happy. Although some kids are kind of uncoordinated, and some are unathletic (making it hard for them to get over me), and some really help to get everyone over me. I always enjoy being of much fun to all (including teachers and adults, some of who climb me).

So then I think again that no other wall could entertain so many people for years and years, or sit around enjoying nature, or do anything I could do and don't! (At least in front of people.) So then I realize again that my life as "The Wall" is "the good life."
