Bertha Parker at her retirement dinner in 1955.
Bertha Parker was an elementary science teacher from 1916-55. She was one of the most
influential science teachers of her generation, and published at least 87 books on science and
science education.
Bird Puzzles came out in 1938; Ms. Parker had written it while recovering from
the mumps. She had been encouraged by the Director of the School to develop
elementary science teaching so that pupils performed activities which taught
them basic principles. She enjoyed puzzles herself so the tenor of her writing was her own.
Secretarial help to facilitate the process was made available to her at the outset.
