French club lunch, 1901

Students in the French Club, who were in 4th to 8th grade, prepared the lunch and set the table. They spoke only French at these meals to simulate an experience they might have in France.

The conversational approach to foreign language was taught to elementary school children in the early 1900's at Parker's Model School and Dewey's Lab School. Since lunch was normally made by students themselves, culinary vocabulary was easily woven into the lesson. This photograph dates to the period before 1903 when the Dewey and Parker Schools moved to Blaine Hall.
