Wilbur Jackman was made Principal of the Elementary School when the Deweys departed Chicago at the end of the summer in 1904. John Dewey had tried to hire Jackman in 1899 when Parker's faculty went on leave.

Wilbur Jackman died suddenly of pneumonia in January 1907, after attending a reception for College of Education students. He has been called "The Father of Elementary Science". Jackman Field, formerly called Jackman Playground, is named after him.
