There are several ways. Each one requires some form of cooperation with IS so we can ensure that purchases are supportable and compatible with current or future systems. We reserve the right to withhold support services for purchases made without approval from the Director of Information Technology (DIT).
Most new equipment comes from computing capital requests. Early in the Winter Quarter, the DIT distributes Computing Capital Expenditure request forms for the next school year. This is a different form than the Facilities Capital Request Form distributed by the Director of Facilities and Security. Software is not eligible for capital funding.
These requests are processed in the Spring quarter. Approval decisions are made and shared late in the Spring quarter.
Schools and departments can elect to purchase computer equipment from their respective budgets. Purchases must be approved by the DIT before orders are cut.
Lab receives some federal funding each year that may be used to purchase computing hardware and software. The funds, released in the winter quarter, are limited and usually devoted to experimental or innovative uses of technology. If you have such a project in mind, you would be wise to contact the DIT during fall quarter.
Each year, the Parents' Association solicits requests from teachers for funds to augment their curricular efforts. Some teachers have been granted computing equipment when requesting items not typically furnished by the Schools. Again, all such purchases must be cleared with the DIT prior to purchase.
From time to time, parents or alumni wish to give a gift or donation of computing equipment. Please do not make any commitments to accept a donation without consulting the DIT first. Used hardware people want to donate is rarely worth accepting. There is a standing policy on donations that can be found here. Please read and follow it.
