Join the Parents’ Association board for 2009–10
Nominations are being accepted through April 17 for open board positions for the 2009–10 school year. Nomination forms and a list of open positions and their job descriptions can be found on the PA website.
Rites of May
Rites of May, an all-schools festival, is May 14–16 with the parent-sponsored
International Festival on Saturday, May 16. The International Festival features crafts, traditions, entertainment, and food from around the world along with games and a book fair. Volunteer for what is one of Lab’s oldest traditions. There are committees for every interest. And please make sure your culture is represented with a booth. If you are able to help plan the event or volunteer on May 16, e-mail Catherine Beard, Lauren Polite or Peri Altan.

Transition meetings
Parents of students who will enter kindergarten, first, third, or fifth grades in the 2009–10 school year are invited to attend transition meetings to learn more about these grade levels. Teachers, counselors, and principals will provide information and answer questions about developmental changes, curriculum, and special activities that take place at each of these grade levels. All meetings will take place in Judd 126.
4th into 5th grade: Wednesday, April 22 at 7 p.m.
Nursery into Kindergarten: Tuesday, May 5 at 7 p.m.
Kindergarten into 1st grade: Thursday, May 7 at 7 p.m.
2nd into 3rd grade: Thursday, May 7 at 8 p.m.
“Coffee and Conversation” for parents of first graders

The topic will be “Helping Children Cope with Changes.” Bring questions, ideas, strategies, and experiences as we discuss how parents and teachers can help children weather the inevitable changes in their lives (and maybe even learn to relish new experiences and opportunities.) Transition meetings
Transition meetings allow parents and guardians to understand what their child will experience the following year, to outline the differences between the grades, and to hear from faculty, counselors, and our learning consultant. There will be an opportunity to ask questions. We hope you are able to attend.

Sixth grade camp, April 27–May 1
The sixth grade outdoor education staff have begun planning for our annual trip, Monday, April 27–Friday, May 1, 2009. This week of outdoor education enables students to use classroom-developed skills to explore many aspects of a rural community and its environment and to experience living within a community—which requires the cooperation of all its members.

Eighth grade D.C. trip
Thank you to those who attended the Washington, D.C. meeting. As we get closer to the trip, we will send home an itinerary with flight information and specifics about the trip. Visit our D.C. trip blog where we will post important information, required forms and a packing list, links to the sites we will visit, and any logistical updates. We will also use the blog to post pictures while we are there and to provide information we may need to share such as flight delays or trip highlights
Please complete the student contract, medical information form, and the emergency contact information form, and return the forms to your eighth grader's advisor by April 16.
Interim reports
Spring term interim reports will be available online through PowerSchool at 9 a.m. on April 13. The process for reviewing them will remain the same as last semester. Families will receive an additional copy of the user name and password prior to April 13. If you have questions please contact the Middle School Office.
Middle School Model United Nations
Middle School Model United Nations is back! Activity period meetings will start spring quarter, so encourage your child to sign up. They’ll learn public speaking, about international relations, and see what MUN is all about. Students interested in MUN may contact Jaya Sah, president of High School MUN.

Flavafest, Saturday, April 25
Flavafest, an annual event, brings together High School and university students interested in promoting and embracing diversity. The event is open to all and is organized and run by U-Highers. This year the event will include a step performance and guest speaker Liz Fernandez. The $5 entrance fee includes lunch and a really cool T-shirt!
Summer Link science opportunity application process
Summer Link, an important opportunity for U-High juniors to work in science labs at the University of Chicago is taking applications for this summer’s program. Juniors interested in applying will need to contact Sharon Housinger for more information and an application.

Freshman laser tag trip
There is a Freshman Laser Tag trip scheduled for Thursday, April 16, from 4–7 p.m. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased in the cafeteria.

Model UN wins best delegation
The Model United Nations Team finished its competitive season by winning the best delegation award at the John Hopkins MUN. The team took eleven firsts, three seconds, and one third. The two seniors, President Jaya Sah and Vice President Mark Wittels, accepted the best delegation award for the team.
