Why Choose Lab Schools?

Born out of a desire to make education active, exciting, participatory, and relevant to life as it is lived, the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools challenge students to be genuine participants in their educational and community lives. Curious, thoughtful students and accomplished, dedicated teachers work together to achieve not only academic excellence but also genuine involvement in the life of our community. Ultimately, fostering independent learners who can ask good questions and come up with creative answers to a wide range of challenges is our primary goal.

From active play and participation in the Lower School to May Project and Advanced Placement courses in the High School, Lab focuses on the personal and intellectual development of our students. They have many outlets for their energies, including over 25 interscholastic and intramural teams at the Middle and High School levels. Students eager to participate in their own educations will find that Lab can accommodate a wide range of interests.

Whether tending to the classroom bunny or conducting sophisticated physics experiments, our students are introduced to the joys and complexities of life, bringing their own sensibilities to bear as they learn the fine points of calculus or history. We expect that they will one day be actively engaged in the world as intellectual, business, and social leaders, as well as volunteers, advisors, and community members. Our students return to us happy to have been part of a community that stretched their limits and showed them what is possible-one that continues to encourage them to accept the challenge of achievement.
