Our StudentsLab students are some of the most interesting kids around. Although many of our students come from the Hyde Park neighborhood, the greater Chicago area, and even northwestern Indiana, residence alone doesn't tell the whole story: Many of our students have national or international backgrounds, and approximately 35 percent are students of color. For us, diversity isn't just a goal-it's a reality. We profit from it every day in the discussions, performances, and constructive energy that make Lab exciting. Although we are one of the largest independent schools in the country, with nearly 1,700 students Nursery through twelfth grade, our students know each other and their teachers well. Students have a voice at Lab, and they are encouraged to make use of it, to speak out and speak up when necessary. Lab students enjoy the challenges they are given and thrive on working hard to achieve their goals. In the lower grades, students eagerly dive into constructive play and active class participation, developing skills that will serve them well throughout their Lab experience. Because they are encouraged to be curious and thoughtful from their earliest days, Lab students of any age are unusually engaged with the world around them. Nearly half of Lab's students remain here throughout their school years, testifying to the commitment they and their families make to the Schools. But we are not insular: New students are always welcome, and after a few weeks it's hard to tell newcomers from "lifers." We could brag about our Lower School sing-alongs, our Middle School fine arts program, or our High School's exceptional community service program, but suffice it to say that Lab students at every age use all the resources available to them, achieving great things in and out of the classroom. An atmosphere of cheerful competition prevails at Lab, spurring students to do their best while supporting them as they grow. | |
