Expansion & Renovation Program

The Laboratory Schools are undertaking an historic expansion that will provide greater opportunities for more students than ever. The expansion will allow the schools to continue to maintain a diverse student body at a time of unprecedented demand both within the University community and among families from the neighborhood and across the city. And over the course of a decade, the project will provide a new, custom-designed early childhood facility; a new arts wing; improved space for libraries, collaborative teaching and counseling; and improved systems, accessibility, sustainability, and infrastructure throughout. The building of Earl Shapiro Hall, located at 5800 S. Stony Island Avenue, is the first phase of the project. Earl Shapiro Hall opened September 2013 and houses students in two Schools: Nursery/Kindergarten (Nursery 3, Nursery 4, and Kindergarten) and Primary School (Grades 1 and 2).

How Does the Expansion Affect the Number of Available Openings for Applicants?

Ultimately, the Schools will grow from approximately 1,780 students to more than 2,000 students across five Schools:  Nursery/Kindergarten, Primary School (Grades 1 and 2), Lower School (Grades 3-5), Middle School (Grades 6-8) and High School (Grades 9-12). That growth will take place in phases, to ensure an optimal educational experience for students and their families.

The first additional openings resulted  from new classrooms that were added as the Nursery/Kindergarten School moved to Earl Shapiro Hall.

Further expansion will occur gradually at the Primary, Lower, Middle and High School as renovation moves forward, accommodating the larger Nursery class as it progresses through the Schools.

Because of the number of variables affecting this long-term project, the Admissions Office asks for your patience and understanding as we begin our journey towards a larger school. Please know that we are committed to monitoring openings, informing families, and accepting additional applications as soon as space is available for each level.

Where Should Families Check for Openings?

Families are asked to check Lab's website regarding openings. As new information becomes available, the Admissions Office will update the website accordingly. Families are encouraged to rely on the Admissions Office for the most accurate information and guidance.

When Should Families Check for Openings?

Lab's admissions process begins one year in advance of enrollment. Therefore, the Admissions Office encourages all families to check the admissions website in the fall of the year prior to desired enrollment. Typically, families should check the website after August 1 (for Nursery 3, Nursery 4, and Kindergarten) and after September 1 (for grades 1-12).

What If a Grade is Full?

Families who are interested in full grades, or have missed application cut-off dates, are strongly encouraged to join Lab’s Interest Pool. The Interest Pool allows the Admissions Office to identify and contact interested families when openings become available.

For more information regarding the Interest Pool, please click HERE.

We hope this is helpful, and we look forward to seeing more families at Lab in the coming years!
