High School Letter

Dear U-High Parents,

School got off to a great start last week with an opening assembly on Interpreter of Maladies. During the assembly several faculty members and students spoke about their experiences of being bi-cultural. After the assembly, students and faculty gathered in small groups to discuss the book. The First Day Committee of teachers and students did a fabulous job planning the day, which provided an engaging way to begin the school year.

School is now in full swing, and I am sure that your sons and daughters are already working hard on not only academic classes but also the many activities and sports U-High students pursue. I look forward to watching athletic events, to chaperoning the Homecoming Dance, to reading the Midway, and to participating in many of the student-organized events of the fall. I am repeatedly impressed by the commitment our students show for all aspects of the program at U-High.

I am writing to remind you about the upcoming High School Open House on Tuesday, October 2nd. I hope everyone will attend. The program will begin at 6:30 pm with a reception sponsored by the Parents’ Association in the cafeteria. Class visits will begin right at 7 pm. Classes will meet in ten-minute blocks and will end at 9:10 pm. Your children’s schedules will be available for you in the cafeteria.

The main purpose of the evening is to allow you to meet the faculty and to learn about courses. During each class meeting, teachers will describe their courses and answer general questions. With only ten minutes to cover a lot of material, they cannot discuss individual students. Should you have specific questions about your children, there will be a high school conference day on Thursday, November 1st. If you would like to talk with a teacher before then, please contact the teacher via email or phone.

During free periods, you are invited to visit with the counselors in UH 109; the Community Learning Coordinator, Luis Pascasio, in UH 217; the librarians, Mary Ackers and Shirley Volk, in Rowley Library; the Athletic Director, David Ribbens in Rowley Library; the Dean of Students, Larry McFarlane; or me. Larry and I will circulate through the high school halls throughout the evening.

I look forward to seeing you on October 2nd.

Sincerely,

Matthew Horvat

Principal
