Lab's Special Character
The special character of the Laboratory Schools results from a rare combination of qualities:
A DISTINCT APPROACH TO EDUCATION
Our method - unregimented but demanding - focuses on teaching students to analyze and critically solve problems, rather than simply absorb facts. Our students pursue a rigorous curriculum in reading, writing, mathematics, and science; and they begin in the early grades to study foreign languages, music, and the arts. In the process, they learn to be responsible and independent in their studies, and to work on their own and with others.
AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO
Lab's connection to the University influences everything from our high academic standards, to the spirit of inquiry that pervades our classrooms. The University also provides our faculty and students with opportunities that would be nearly impossible to match in any other environment, including access to top-notch athletic and library facilities. Each year, many of our high school students take classes at the University. Others do scientific research under the guidance of world-class University professors.
A DIVERSE STUDENT BODY
Our students come from all over the city and surrounding areas - from Pilsen, Evanston, the North Side, the South Side, the suburbs, and Indiana. They come from a broad spectrum of religious faiths and socio-economic backgrounds, and represent the ethnic heritage of 65 countries. While it would be difficult to find a more diverse group of youngsters, our students leave Lab sharing much more than textbooks and teachers. They leave with a respect for different cultures and a commitment to make the world a better place.
A COMMUNITY OF INDIVIDUALS
Lab is a lively, close-knit community where every student is known and cared for as an individual. Ask students what they like about Lab and you'll hear stories about teachers who took the time to encourage them to stretch, take risks, and see education as a lifelong adventure. From nursery school on, lessons are highly individualized and keyed to milestones in intellectual, social, and ethical development.
