Physical Education

The development of physical skills, cardiovascular fitness principles, and the understanding of concepts related to health and wellness can provide students with a foundation for a lifetime of healthful pursuits. The Physical Education, Health, and Wellness Department has been designed to meet this end. We offer a wide variety of activity units in order to accommodate interests and encourage students to select units of varying content. We utilize three full size gyms, two Lower School modified gyms, dance studio, swimming pool, full size soccer field, five tennis courts, and a fitness center. We also have the flexibility to use the Chicago Park District field across 59th street.

Students begin their Physical Education in kindergarten with classes that meet four days a week for 25 minutes. This continues until third grade, when classes meet three days a week for 45 minutes. Swim instruction, stroke development, and various water games are offered in grade 3 through High School. Beginning in grade five, students return to the four day schedules with classes lasting 45 minutes.  Typical classes include team sports, individual sports, and dance. In eighth grade, elective units are offered during the spring quarter. In addition, both seventh and eighth grade students participate in a three week Health and Wellness class. The High School program is primarily elective, with six required units (out of 21).
